Why WorkFolds™ exists

Let's face it, software is control. It shapes what feels natural and easy, what is stilted and hard, and what is never even shown.

The threat of AI is not the technology. It is the infrastructure behind it — opaque, self-governing, issuing decisions by rules it invented for itself, or that others invented on your behalf. As individuals we should care deeply about who gets to manipulate our data, by what rules, what gets surfaced and what gets buried, and whether we can even see those rules let alone challenge them. Most of us cannot. Most systems are not built that way.

WorkFolds™ refuse this. Your data is your own. The rules that govern it should be yours too — visible, yours to set, and yours to change.

We think the rules — particularly how your data, your photos, your files are sorted, organised, and presented — should follow rules you set. Not rules inherited from a platform, quietly decided by an algorithm, or buried in a terms of service nobody reads. Yours. Set plainly. Visible at all times.

WorkFolds™ are free for personal use by an individual. Not an organisation. Not a non-profit. One person, doing their own work. The liberty to think, organise, and create must never be barred by a paywall.

You have heard it said: if you are not paying for the product, you are the product. That is a fair challenge and it deserves a straight answer. We offer this license because we want WorkFolds™ to be used widely and well. Broad, genuine use benefits us — as members of the communities we work in, and through the visibility and reputation that serious use earns. Not your data. Not your attention. The product itself, proving its worth in the world.

We will lose control of this. That is the nature of open licensing, and we accept it. What matters is that the intent is stated clearly, honestly, and on the record.

We track no engagement, profile no behaviour, and build no dossiers. Minimal telemetry exists only to improve the product, is strictly non-identifying, and is fully disclosed. Your work is your private business.

We make no claim over what you create. What you produce belongs to you, in full, for all time.
No restrictions on lawful use
No restrictions on any lawful purpose.
No hostage data
We will never hold your data hostage. Your work will not expire or be locked behind a paywall. Protecting your data is your responsibility — we are not a data security company. That sits between you and your cloud service of choice.
